A Wedding at Valentine's Lodge

This past July, I had the great pleasure of shooting Jennifer and Jordan's wedding in Gardner, New York. They stood under the same chuppah - on the very same ground - that Jordan's parents did, 37 years earlier. This was a first for me, and one I'll never forget. They put so much attention into history and personal details - it was a blissful day.

The ceremony took place at Jordan's parents' second home, which was once a hunting lodge. The bride's bouquet was made by her sister from recycled bottles (it was exquisite!). Jen Townsend made the bride's ring. "She lives up near Rochester," Jennifer said, "and we decided on the design over the phone... It was a a leap of faith, but I really liked her work and trusted her process. Needless to say, I'm thrilled with it!"

Jordan, who started the artisan tonic company Qtonic, wore a Bespoke suit, and Jennifer, who works for Storycorps, wore a stunningly elegant dress from J. Crew. The couple made their entrance in Jennifer's baby blue 1973 VW super convertible, and Jordan's dad drove his 1944 Willy ruby red Jeep.

The food was incredible - it was catered by Village Market - and everything was local and perfectly prepared. I could go on and on about how beautiful the day was - but maybe you should just check out the photos!

The Catskills are an unpredictable but always glorious location for a wedding, and having a couple like Megan and Peter made this occasion especially magical. All day the rain was looming: would the ceremony happen outside? We started doing the family portraits inside - but the light outdoors was incredible: the perfect combination of diffused light that allowed the greens of the landscape and the grey and fushica of the bridal parties to pop: Nature's gift to this day. Needless to say, we went outside.

Karting With Cris

Last April, my friend Cris invited me out to the California Speedway in Fontana, CA, to watch her compete (she races go-karts). She's a Brazilian national who's a fantastic costume designer (check out her work in the upcoming American version/David Fincher directed "Girl With The Dragon Tattoo). Since she's the karting expert, let's hear what she has to say about it...

Cris: Ever since I was very little, I was into Formula 1. Formula 1 is one of the most watched sports in Brazil, after soccer of course. When I was 12, in 1994, Aryton Senna - the best Brazilian racer, or the best ever as people might say - died in Formula 1. It was one of the biggest tragedies the country had ever seen: a million people were on the streets to see his procession pass by. Very similar to when Princess Diana died. He was an inspirational guy and amazing at what he did. That put a lot of ideas into kids' heads. I wanted to start karting before that, since I had a few friends in school who raced. But because of how expensive it was and somewhat dangerous, my parents didn't want me to race.

Somehow I got the bug again, and at 28 years old I realized I could do it myself, no parents and I had the money. My American friends didn't get it at first, they didn't understand where it came from and what the point was. But all the Brazilian ones got it right away, it's the Senna syndrome, every Brazilian of a certain age has a little of it.

Karting is an obsession to all who are part of it. It's a family sport and it's big here in the States, but a lot of people don't even know what a real racing go kart is. They think it's something you put together at home and add a lawn-mower engine to it. Also what they don't know is that most professional racers, Formula 1, Nascar, Indy Series came from karting. It's the most raw form of motorsport, no suspention, no seat belt, up to 90mph, 0 to 60 in less than 3 seconds and G-forces up to 2Gs. It's much harder to drive a kart well than any car. Ayrton Senna said when he first sat in a Formula 1 car, "I feel like I'm back in a kart". It's rough but like most sports, the adrenaline is what gets you addicted, the will to do better, to be better, to be faster than others.

The first thing I did when I got to Adolfas Mekas and Pola Chapelle's house was to make an offering to St. Tula, Patron Saint of Cinema. I placed a tarnished old British pence on the altar, then dinner began. Adolfas was my film adviser at Bard College; 25 years later, we find ourselves living just miles away from where it all began.

It was wonderful to spend Sunday with Adolfas and Pola (a dancer and chanteuse), their lovely son Sean, and friends. After a delicious meal, we toasted St. Tula with Adolfas's homemade Lemoncello and Nocino. Hail St. Tula!

My very good friend, fantastic photographer and Kids with Cameras Haiti project director Gigi Cohen has curated a fantastic show that consists of her work with 12 domestic child laborers in Haiti. With Gigi's guidance, the children used plastic Holga cameras to explore and document their world. The show opens tomorrow March 3, 2011 at the Overture Center For The Arts, 201 State St. Madison WI. The show is up until April 30.

Mark Mejia, owner and master hatter of Baron Hats in Burbank, Ca., took the time the other day to show me around his store and workshop. The shop is like a museum of film history (they're located near Warner Brothers and Disney studios); they've supplied hats for many classic television shows and films - among them, Casablanca, The Sting, The Searchers, and the Cohen Brothers' latest film, True Grit. This shop is one of a dying breed, producing beautiful handcrafted hats. If you are ever in Los Angeles and have the time, you must stop by this gem of a place - and maybe you'll leave with a hat.

GPS/Which Way Do I Go?

I came to photography early in life and driving late in life....Photography early beacuse both my parents were photographers, driving late because I grew up in NYC and have lived most of my life in Cities.
When I moved to a place where there was no mass transit, I finally had to learn how to drive. Once I did, I went through many stages; first I had to have someone in the car with me-but they couldn't talk- and no music. Then I got over that, but it took a while before I could drive at night- or on a highway, or into a large city. It might sound strange, but when you're is used to being a passenger for thirty years....(or so years...), it takes time to make a change. So- this summer, after getting lost a few too many times, being in areas where there was no cellular service and trying to drive with a print-out of a google map, I finally got a GPS. I call her (yes, her) "Gilly", after the Kristen Wiig SNL character...And still, I question where she is taking me...

Widelux

I bought my Widelux F8 10 years ago from my friend Jose. For some reason I stopped shooting with it about 3 years ago. This summer, I retrieved it from one of my camera bags and started to shoot with it again. I like shooting TMAX 3200 with this camera; I have a lot more flexibility when I use this film, plus I love the grain of it. Whenever I have the Widelux on me people are transfixed- not only with the way the camera looks, but with the movement of the lens.

Jeff Bridges has a wonderful book of his Widelux photos and a fantastic link on his website about how to care for the camera.

This summer has been like a rich and fulfilling meal. My friend Raissa St. Pierre organizes the Thursday night music program at the Bard College Spiegeltent. She first saw Khaira Arby with her nine-piece band at the Festival-au-Desert in Essakane, Mali, 2008 - and she's managed to get them here on their first American tour. They're playing tonight at the Bard Spiegeltent - and yesterday, I was given the amazing opportunity to photograph the band at the WKZE radio station in Red Hook. I was completely blown away by their music, and their communal spirit was amazing. It was a real gift to have spent the afternoon listening to their truly inspirational

The first week of August is the time when Anne and I get to have a vacation in the middle of all the work that we are doing. Sutton Place East in North Truro is where we love to stay. This might be our last year, because the property is for sale. This is one of the last no-frills, down-home, come-as-you-are places on the Lower Cape. I'm a nostalgic person, and through the years of our coming here, we've made many friends. Last night, the sun was setting, Anne and I were on the beach, and manager Mary came out with one of her daughters and grandchildren... and you know with the Cape light and a beautiful multi-generational family, what could go wrong?... Nothing...
